Tan Tips

PREPARING YOUR SKIN FOR ‘PICTURE PERFECT’ SPRAY TAN

Preparation is key for a perfect spray tan. With these tips and tricks, your Honey Glow tan will be easy peesy:

BEFORE YOUR SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT:

Exfoliate and moisturise the day prior to your spray tan, paying particular attention to elbows, knees, ankles and problem dry areas. On the morning of your tan, shower and exfoliate using water only - do not use any body wash products as these may leave a barrier on your skin, preventing the colour from fully developing.

Wax/shave/laser at least 24-48 hours prior to your tan. This allows the pores time to close. Dotting in pores may appear if not adhered to.

24 hours before your tan avoid using bar soaps, high pH shower products, oil based products or in-shower moisturisers. These products may act as a barrier against your skin, where it will stop the fast tanning actives to develop onto the skin.

Don't apply moisturiser, deodorant, perfume or makeup on the day of application.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

During your spray tan, feel free to wear whatever you feel comfortable in, such as underwear, bikini, G-string, or (ladies only) may wear nothing at all if they prefer. Disposable underwear is provided if needed.

If you need to wear clothes directly after your tan has dried, we recommend dark, loose fitting clothes.

You may experience some of the tan rubbing off on your clothes before the tan has been rinsed off. This should easily wash out of most fabrics, however lighter coloured materials, including leather, may stain.

AFTER TAN TIPS

Leave your spray tan to dry completely. We will advise how long you need to wait before you are able to wet your skin, usually between 2 and 8 hours.

It is recommended not to exercise or carry out any activities that may cause perspiration between the tanning and showering phase.

When showering it is completely normal for some of the initial bronzer to wash off. Your tan will still continue to develop after showering.

To keep your tan looking great for longer, we recommend moisturising twice daily and patting dry with your towel (as opposed to rubbing). Short showers and drinking plenty of water keeps your skin hydrated and looking glowy!

Avoid long baths, spas and swimming in chlorinated water, as well as exfoliating products.

FAQs

How do I remove the tan once it starts to fade? Milk works amazingly as a Tan Remover. The lactic acid in milk helps break down the left over spray tan.  It is a great way to remove the spray tan as it's gentle on the skin and it's a natural skin exfoliant. Place some milk in a bowl and dip your exfoliating mitt into the milk and start exfoliating using large circular motions... You will see that stubborn tan being removed easily!

What about Streaking and/or turning orange?
This is our most asked question! Spray tanning has come a long way since the early days of tanning, better solutions, machines, training and spray tan technology virtually eliminates these issues. With over twelve years industry experience, producing streaky and orange tans are a thing of the past.

I have an event coming up, when should I tan?

When you have an event, we suggest two days prior to ensure that your tan continues to develop overnight and you look the best possible for your event.

Can I shave before a tan?

Yes, but we suggest not using a shaving cream as this will sometimes contain lanolin which will block your tan from fully developing. Soap and water would be fine and try to shave 24-48 hours prior to tanning.

When should I do my waxing/laser treatments?

We suggest you should wax/laser at least 1 to 2 days before having a spray tan to avoid the spray getting into your pores, which are freshly open after waxing/laser.

Do I have to get naked?
NO. It’s entirely up to you. If you don’t want to get naked, we suggest you wear old dark underwear. For men, underwear, swim trunks or shorts. We keep a range of disposable underwear available for you to use.

How does spray tan work?

When DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a colorless 3-carbon sugar, is applied to the skin a chemical reaction with amino acids in the surface cells of the skin occurs. A browning, or tanning, effect is produced.

Will the tan stain my sheets and clothes?

No, but bronzer will transfer onto your sheets and clothing generally the first day so wear something dark and always loose fitting. If you are concerned about your bed, either change your sheets or put down a towel. The 1 and 2hr tan will give you the option to shower prior to bedtime. If you sleep in your tan often, you can purchase specialised sleeping bags from TANZEE Australia (www.tanzee.com.au)

Is it safe?
YES. It is MUCH safer than exposing your skin to the sun’s harmful rays or lying in a tanning bed, and you still get that fabulous tanned look. DHA has been approved by the FDA for use in the personal care industry for over 30 years. No adverse affects have been reported other than minor skin irritations on allergic people. Allergic reactions are extremely rare and if you have experienced allergic reactions to self-tanning or other beauty products please arrange a skin patch test first.

Can you still tan outdoors if you have a spray tan?
YES. You can, but you need to remember that spray tan, whilst it looks gorgeous, does not give you any protection from the sun’s ultraviolet light. For outdoor tanning, we recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more.

Remember that the sun dries your skin out, reducing the longevity of your spray tan.

Hint: Lots of people have a Professional Spray Tan before their beach holiday, so they can start off looking tanned and fabulous from day one!
